Decolonize Your Mind

If you are new to my page or have been following my journey for a while, you should by now know how passionate I am about using my platform to shine light on things that I view as important, inspirational etc. Sometimes I can not get into full detail about certain things on an Instagram post so that is why I decided to start this blog. A fun fact about me is that I am Guatemalan, both my parents and my sister were born in Guatemala and immigrated to America before having me. I have always had a love for my culture and intrigued by the struggles of my people. I am so grateful that my parents decided to pursue their dreams and allow my sister and I the opportunity to freely pursue ours. I can not even begin to imagine the struggles I would have faced if my parents never decided to migrate to the US. After watching numerous interviews and documentaries on Guatemalan Indigenous culture, it has drastically shifted my perspective on who I am and where I come from. I strongly believe my ancestors still live through me and one of my life goals is to give back to where it all began my roots. For now all I can give them is awareness. I am all for women empowerment and breaking the “machismo” that has been ruining Latino communities for centuries. It saddens me how much I have taken for granted being able to even write this blog, I have the freedom of speech and access to unlimited resources, and fortunate enough to pursue a higher education something many of my people do not get to do simply because of their gender. I am so thankful that my father has always wanted me to pursue an education so I can be well prepared to face the world on my own two feet. We really do take for granted our smartphones, our laptops and we would rather share our meal instead of informing and awakening the masses. We live in a country our parents worked so hard to get us too but we chose to party every weekend and totally disregard their struggle and their vision. Don’t let your opportunity in this country go to waste, be the voice of the voiceless and stand up for your people. For all those who could only dream of the things they would do if they were in your position. I am so proud of these Guatemalan women who are brave enough to stand up and demand change. Even if it is in small increments, they are patiently empowering each other through radio stations I will leave the links to their blog below and I hope you enjoy the YouTube click I provided above. I am so proud of my roots and I hope to one day be able to go to my homeland and help make an impact of change and progression. I use to ambition expensive bags, shoes, trips but now I ambition nothing more than bringing social change. There is no greater purpose than to serve others in any way possible. We have the

opportunities to learn and pass down that knowledge to our Latino communities, it is up to us to bring forth the change. Protect your culture do not let them rip you from who you are, research and ask your loved ones about your homeland. It is so humbling and rewarding learning about who you are.
